Thick vs. Thin Engagement Ring Bands: Which One is Right For You?

At Lauren B., we offer an array of styles to fit every personality and design preference. Every ring can be custom ordered to feature any width! It is important to not only choose your engagement ring bands width based on the aesthetic you would like to achieve. You should also consider your lifestyle and hobbies to determine the band width that suits you best!

THIN & DELICATE

Currently, the thin band has been popularized to make an engagement ring appear super delicate and feminine. However it also serves a functional purpose! Thinner bands can make your diamond appear larger by drawing your eye right to the center stone as the focal point of your ring. With options like solitaire knife edge styles and our thinnest diamond band measuring around 1.8mm, the proportion of the stone to the subtle appearance of a thin band can make any center stone size appear larger! It also is a great option if you plan to stack multiple bands or a thicker style next to it. Starting with a thinner style allows more finger-space on the hand to mix and match any way you like!

With that said, a thin band design is NOT for everyone. If you are especially hard on rings due to your working environment, hobbies, or have trouble with regulating your ring size, we recommend you consider something thicker and more durable for every day wear. Though our materials are very high quality, they are not invincible, which means that they CAN be easily damaged with any rough interaction even inadvertently. Even just opting for a slightly thicker style (2mm or more) can add support and longevity to almost any ring!

THICKER & SUPPORTIVE

Thicker band styles (most commonly between 2-3mm) are not just more durable – with diamond settings, they can add even more brilliance! Whether you prefer a single larger row, a split band style, or a 3-row pave setting, the added support of a thicker band can allow more room for more diamond weight! Many clients also like the additional surface coverage a thicker style allows, while still leaving plenty of room to accommodate your favorite wedding band!

For a more supportive style you might also consider a solitaire design. Because a solitaire design has no diamonds on the band, this keeps the metal structure stronger.

Thicker engagement ring bands CAN still become damaged. While you don’t need to be as mindful of fragility, you should still be attentive to blunt force interactions. These could move the prongs and loosen the diamonds. You want your ring to last a lifetime so regular maintenance, cleaning, and inspections would benefit any ring design! We recommend having them checked at least 1-2 times per year to ensure that your ring is at its best.

HOW DO I PROTECT MY RING?

In addition to having your ring checked, you should also be mindful of the circumstances in wearing your ring. You should take off your ring and keep it in a safe place to reduce the opportunities for ring damage. If you are carrying heavy objects, working out, even going to sleep damage can occur. Unforeseen accidents do happen. We always recommend having your ring insured just in case!
