Ratio

Cushion cut diamonds come in a variety of ratios. At a ratio of 1.0 they are a perfect square. We find most elongated cushions to be in the ratio of about 1.1 give or take. Anything longer than that is more rare and can look like an oval shape.

Similar to the cushion, radiant cut diamonds will come in a variety of ratios. However we do find that the radiant cuts can get away with an even more elongated shape and appearance than the cushions. For example you can easily opt for a radiant with a 1.2 and above ratio while still maintaining that beautiful rectangular appearance.

Cut Comparison

Cushion cuts are known for their soft appearance due to their rounded edges. The cushion cut diamond will also give you a very sparkly appearance if cut well. We specialize in cushion brilliant style faceting featuring bright flashes of light. Notice in the image that the cushion brilliant style cut has large facets.

The beauty of radiant cuts is that they have a very glittery sparkle featuring smaller facets. We would liken the radiant cut diamond to a crushed ice cushion giving a glittery sparkle. Radiant cut diamonds, like their brother the emerald cut, have cut corners meaning that their corners feature straight edges. There is definitely an edgy, clean, and modern look to a radiant cut due their crisp lines and straight outline.

One thing to note is that the prongs on a radiant cut diamond ring will cover up the cut corners a bit so that specific detail

Quality Comparison

Both radiant and cushion are good at hiding imperfections and color. We would leave the minimum color at J and minimum clarity at SI2 only if the diamond is clean to the eye. We can assist you with selecting an eye clean diamond in this category. If you are more color or clarity sensitive then you can easily go up a few notches as well!

Weight Distribution

The cushion and radiant cuts do tend to distribute weight a bit differently. An elongated cushion tends to be slightly wider whereas the radiant cut will appear longer but slimmer depending on the diamond you select. For example if you have an elongated 2 carat cushion cut it might measure 8mm x 7mm. By comparison an elongated radiant cut can measure 8.5mm x 6.55 for a more slender appearance.

The Verdict

We have to say we LOVE both elongated cushions and elongated radiant cuts! If you are trying to occupy more length space on your finger then radiant may be your best bet. If you love the softer appearance and fire of the cushion and want to fill up more space on the width of your finger than an elongated cushion is your choice.
