When picking an engagement ring design it is always important to evaluate your every day lifestyle because this will directly relate to how you want the ring to sit on your finger. For example, a ring that is set higher would not be ideal for someone with an active lifestyle or for example someone who is always putting gloves on each day. If you do things daily that are less active, you can get away with a ring that protrudes a bit more off the band because it will not be effected.
Firstly, let’s explain what a high setting vs. lower setting actually means. Take this two-tone invisible gallery ring for example shown bottom right. We have shown the side profile view of the ring. We have eliminated the entire bottom galley portion of extra metal stems that connect the head to the band. Because of this, the invisible gallery ring sits much closer to the finger. This particular design is the most low profile engagement ring you can opt for because it lays directly on the hand without any protrusion. We love this ring for clients who put on gloves everyday, or who tend to be clumsier 😉 because it does not knock into things easily. Fear not, you CAN wear a wedding band next to this design, provided the wedding band is not too tall or bulky! You can also opt to add a halo to the invisible gallery. This combines the increased surface area of a seamless halo with the feeling of a secure low set ring. Check out this ring model# RS-269 from our website that features a double edge halo in our low profile custom invisible gallery design.
Classic Four Prong: If you don’t mind having the ring sit up a little higher, or if the invisible gallery design is not your favorite, you can definitely set it in a more traditional way like the RS-198 shown to the left. This exemplifies majority of the rings seen on our site- a traditional 4 stem attachment. This design gives more height but we wouldn’t say this ring is exactly high set- it just gives an illusion of sitting higher off the finger, in comparison to a ring that sits much flatter on the finger. Everyone loves this design for its iconic floating look of the center diamond and the way it showcases the center-stone without any distraction. You would still consider it a low profile engagement ring
Add a Cathedral– This is an option that will sit about the same height as let’s say the RS-198 however the addition of the cathedral means that the ring itself will feel a bit more stable on the hand and feel more like a low profile engagement ring. Here is a perfect example of a clean cathedral style pave design from Lauren B shown with a moissanite center. Because the band and basket attach at the stems and at the basket, instead of ONLY at the stems, you will find that this gives a more secure feeling to the ring. You won’t feel as if the diamond is just sticking out because the cathedral anchors it in place. We like the flowing look that adding a cathedral gives. The domed appearance creates a put together appeal where everything is connected and there are no gaps.
These two photos below perfectly illustrate the heights and protrusions of each ring. Notice the invisible gallery halo and plain invisible gallery sit the lowest. The cathedral band and regular band sit at the same exact height measurement wise however, the cathedral is most connected and more anchored to your hand.
If you want a ring that sits extremely high, you can opt to add an extra step or scarf underneath the center stone. This is perfect for someone who wants a true princess look putting all the emphasis on the main center diamond. Check out this ring model# VNR-13090 pave cushion cut engagement ring by Lauren B
