Most everyone this day in age knows that white gold has become the most popular color of gold by far. It is a gorgeous and durable option, but for people who like something either a little more traditional there are more colors of gold than most people realize! Gold comes in about ten distinctly different colors, but there are different shades within each color! This leads me to a discussion about the two most popular colors of gold, rose gold vs. yellow gold.
Rose Gold vs. Yellow Gold
Rose gold vs. yellow gold. Yellow gold is the most traditional, considering that gold in its original state is a reddish yellow color already and has been used for most of human history. Many people will only wear yellow gold because it looks like gold, as opposed to fearing that a white metal just looks like silver, which is a less valuable material.
Rose gold has been around for a long time, but it has more recently become all the rage. Between the two, rose gold is decidedly the most popular for recent bridal jewelry. We are often asked if rose gold is just a passing fad that will fall out of style, but I do not believe it is so. Due to the fact that technology has propelled the jewelry industry into a world full of countless options and details, I believe that rose gold has become a staple and permanent option for a unique and different engagement ring.
What Is Gold Made Of?
All gold, even yellow, is mixed with different alloys to make it very certain colors, as well as more durable. For the sake of comparison, I will use 18 karat gold as the example. 18k gold of any color is 75 percent gold and 25 percent alloy. 18k yellow gold is most commonly a mixture of 75% gold, 16% fine silver, and 9% copper. 18k rose gold is the same 75/25 mixture, but is 21% copper and 4% silver to make it more reddish-pink. These are pretty standard, but changing the mixtures ever so slightly will change the color of the gold!
We can make any of our designs in any color gold or platinum, so deciding between the different colors is a step of the process. Consider what you normally wear and what sort of statement you’d like your ring to make. White gold could be considered more versatile if you wear different metals, whereas rose gold can create more of a unique, different statement. Do not forget about yellow gold as well with its timeless, classic appeal.
