Peridot is a stunning yellow-green gemstone nicknamed “the gem of the sun”. This makes it the perfectly appropriated birthstone for the month of August! These beautiful gems are not only unique in their distinctive color, but also in their history!
History
Some green peridots date back 4.5 million years. They have been found in the outer reaches of our solar system, formed from the mineral olivine. They are symbolic of light and warmth, and are believed to bring love and prosperity to those who wear it.
Quality
Green Peridot have a Mohs hardness of 6.5-7. This makes them of comparable softness to aquamarines and morganites. Because of their softness, these gems can be hardness-enhanced. This makes them more suitable for jewelry setting. They can also be color treated and clarity enhanced, but larger rough has been found with higher traces of iron and magnesium present, which give the peridot its notorious hue.
Peridots are typically found as an irregular crystal found in other rocks, usually ones formed from lava – but they have also been found in meteorites! Those originated from space are a more rare find, and almost never set in jewelry.
