Custom engagement ring design means you can have the exact design that you want. What this also means is that the sky’s the limit with what you can do. Check out the ways we love to put a unique spin on classic designs with the nontraditional engagement ring designs below.
Set It East/West
Diamonds are normally set in the same direction depending upon their shape. For example, emerald, radiant, oval and pear are set north/south which elongates the finger. For a more unique and nontraditional look, set your gem east/west across the finger. Setting clean symmetrical lines this way has become a new trend which is why you’ll see emerald and radiant cuts sitting east/west more frequently.
Add Some Color
There are many ways to add color to your nontraditional engagement ring designs. For something subtle, consider setting the stone in rose or yellow gold. You can also set the top of the setting in all white gold atop a colored metal band. This works if you want to eliminate the contrast of the colored metal against the center stone. Deep blue sapphire and yellow diamonds are classic center stones. Most other colors will give you a more unique and nontraditional look.
Colored stones also make a wonderful diamond alternative. Lauren B’s World of Color focuses on each colored stone in detail to help you find the best for your design. Most often used are sapphire and ruby because they are almost as hard as diamond. Keep in mind that the hardness of a stone determines whether or not it can be worn everyday or not.
