Band Thickness for Your Diamond Engagement Ring

The width on the shank of your engagement ring can completely transform the overall look of you ring.  It really comes down to a matter of preference and any band thickness you choose can be incorporated into most any ring design you like: halo vs non-halo, rose gold or yellow gold, etc.  When speaking about engagement ring designs we are talking in terms of millimeters so any miscalculation can change the entire look of the ring.  For this reason it is important to be precise in your requests, and more importantly work with a jeweler who can accurately execute it properly.  Here we break down the different shank widths to give you a better understanding.

rs-63The thinnest, most delicate 1.7-1.8mm : This is the thickness of our signature micropave settings like the RS-63 (shown to the right). This is the thinnest we would hand craft our bands while still maintaining security and durability, and also feel this shank thickness is better suited for diamonds around 2.5 carats and under. A large diamond would be slightly top heavy in this design so would probably add just a touch more metal to the band in order to provide proper support. The thinner bands are more delicate and need to be treated and worn as such because of how thin it is. It is also important to note that because diamonds are paved on such a thin band, the metal becomes less substantial as well. Our clients tend to love how the thin pave bands provide a beautiful contrast with the center diamond and make any stone in the middle really stand out. This delicate look is hands down our most popular look at Lauren B!

rs-461.9-2mm This is a slightly thicker option that still gives off a delicate appearance while having a sturdier feel to the band.  The diamonds on this band would produce more sparkle because they are a touch bigger, and are a great option for someone who wants a delicate look but just a bit more substantial. We like this as an in between option for someone who likes to feel their ring on their finger but keep it looking clean and delicate. See RS-46 shown to the right for an example of this style ring

2.3 mm band and up will be considered a thick band engagement ring This thickness is nice for someone who wants a very sturdy feel with larger sparkle coming from the band. For those who use their hands a lot throughout the day, these bands prove to be more stable because there is more metal holding each diamond. This shank thickness gives an amazing sparkle and every single diamond on the band is visible to the eye.  At this point, the band does compete with the center diamond so keep that in mind as you may not want such a thicker band to complement a center diamond that is 1 carat or less in the center.  These type of bands can be pave set but in many cases may be prong set because the diamonds are too large to be inlaid into the ring.
