In a previous post we went over three stone rings and more specifically all about trapezoid side stones. Today we want to talk about one of the most popular type of side stones and these are called tapered baguettes.
What is a baguette diamond?
These diamonds are very similar to emerald cuts in their faceting arrangement and overall shape, but differ in that they only have two rows of facets. So essentially the baguette diamonds are a step cut and they have a very linear appearance.
If you remember, we discussed that trapezoid side stones typically will only work with square and rectangular shaped center stones that have a clean edge to them, such as this radiant cut diamond with brilliant trapezoids.
A trapezoid would not work with a rounded diamond shape because it would not match up properly.
In our engagement rings you would typically find us working with tapered baguettes. These are a variation on the rectangular shape, and give a really nice flow from the center diamond to the band of the ring.
Who would would consider baguette side stones?
If you love a classic design but feel a solitaire is too simple then a baguette setting is a really great option. The tapered baguettes blend in really nicely with the overall ring. They do not take away from the center diamond.
What we love about baguette side stones is that they work perfectly with ANY type of center diamond. They are really versatile and blend perfectly with many center stone options
Step cut baguettes paired with a step cut center give a nice symmetry to the overall ring.
A brilliant cut center diamond paired with baguettes offer a beautiful contrast between the center and the side stones. The understated look of the baguettes helps to accentuate the sparkle of the center diamond shape
Types of Baguettes
Starting with this emerald cut center diamond notice the tapered baguette have a slim and delicate appearance to them.
Comparing this pair to the ones shown on this pear shape and tapered baguette setting. The baguettes on the pear shape are significantly wider at the top and taper more dramatically.
Another variation on the tapered baguette would be bullet side stones. These are really similar in look to the baguettes however they end at a point. Bullet side stones can also come in fuller shapes like the one shown- or you can opt for something more slim as well.
We like to prepare matched pair options for our clients based on their preferences. This way they can select the exact shape baguettes they have mind for their custom design.
When selecting baguettes for your engagement ring we want to keep the center diamond size and shape in mind. This way we can get the right proportions. You also want to match the overall quality of the side stones to the center diamond this way there are no obvious differences.
Some people worry that their tapered baguette engagement ring won’t fit well with a wedding band: however we custom create our engagement ring so that many bands can sit flush underneath without any gaps
